Spring is here!!! April is known for National Facial Protection Month. With the warm weather comes more play time outside and organized sports. Many children, teens and adults will once again engage in travel by bike, skateboard or maybe even roller skates. They may pick back up those rackets and bats, lace up those cleats and hit the fields. Whether it’s soccer, tennis, lacrosse or baseball, it is super important to protect those pearly whites of theirs. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, prior to implementation of the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) mouth guard rule an athlete participating in contact sports had a 10% chance of sustaining a significant oral-facial injury each season and better than a 50% chance during their secondary school careers.
Multiple studies by the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Academy of Sports Dentistry convincingly show the reduction of oral-facial injuries with the use of mouthguards.
As they run out of the house this spring for those extra curricular after school activities, make sure they are protected. Be sure they reach for that helmet and eyewear, protect those elbows and wrists with the appropriate equipment and lets make sure to keep those pearly whites in their mouths…. Not in their hands!
